MicroplaSTEAM: Empowering Youth for Microplastics Prevention
€8,000 awarded
Project duration: January 2025 – September 2025
Status: On Going
Grantee: SciCo
THE CHALLENGE:
Microplastic pollution is a growing environmental crisis, particularly in marine ecosystems. These tiny plastic particles infiltrate waterways, harming biodiversity and entering the food chain. The Argosaronic Gulf is no exception. Despite their significant impact, microplastics remain largely invisible to the public, making awareness and education crucial in tackling the problem. Understanding the causes, pathways, and effects of microplastics is essential for fostering informed and proactive communities. However, there is a lack of accessible, hands-on educational opportunities that enable young people to engage with this issue meaningfully.
THE SOLUTION:
To address this challenge, AEF is fostering the dissemination of knowledge through environmental education, supporting the MicroplastSTEAM project launched by SciCo. This is an initiative integrating STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) education to equip students and teachers with the knowledge and tools to study microplastics in their local environment. The program will engage 10 primary and secondary schools in the Argosaronic Gulf, offering training for educators, fieldwork for students, and creative workshops to repurpose microplastics into art. By combining scientific research with artistic expression, MicroplaSTEAM fosters critical thinking and civic responsibility, empowering young learners to take action against microplastic pollution.
THE OUTCOMES:
– Training educators of 10 primary and secondary schools of the Argosaronic with STEAM-based educational methods and microplastics research techniques.
– Distribution of STEAM kits to the schools and implementation of hands on student-ked scientific research on local beaches using standardized scientific protocols.
– Creative workshops to repurpose microplastics into art and exhibition of the art pieces at high profile events
OUR PARTNER ORGANIZATION:
SciCo (Science Communication) is a nonprofit organization, founded in 2008, dedicated to making science accessible, engaging, and impactful. By collaborating with scientists, educators, and artists, SciCo transforms complex scientific topics into experiential learning opportunities that inspire curiosity and action.
The MicroplaSTEAM initiative aligns with SciCo’s mission to use STEAM education as a powerful tool for environmental awareness, bridging the gap between science and society to drive sustainable change.
