Posidonia Oceanica: Our Valuable Underwater Forests

€5,000 awarded

Project duration: 01/01/2025 – 31/05/2025
Status: On Going
Grantee: General High School of Poros

THE CHALLENGE:

The Mediterranean is home to one of the most vital yet underappreciated ecosystems: the sea forests of Posidonia oceanica, also known as Posidonia meadows. These underwater meadows play a crucial role in maintaining marine biodiversity, stabilizing the seabed, and absorbing carbon dioxide. Despite their significance, few people—whether locals or tourists—recognize their importance or the growing threats they face due to pollution, boat mooring, coastal development, and destructive fishing practices.

Raising awareness about these vital ecosystems is the first step toward their conservation. With younger generations holding the key to long-term change, it is essential to engage students, local authorities, and the broader community in understanding and protecting the fragile underwater forests that surround them.

THE SOLUTION:

AEF is dedicated to protecting marine ecosystems by investing in education and community-driven conservation efforts. In line with this commitment, we are happy to support a school-led initiative designed to raise awareness about the role and threats to Posidonia meadows. Through experiential learning, scientific research, and community engagement, the project aims to empower students to become active environmental stewards.

The programme activities, carefully designed by the school organizers, in consultation with experts, local stakeholders and the AEF team, include students’ participation in research, expert discussions and hands-on activities, along with collaboration with marine biologists, university professors, and local divers to gain knowledge about the health of Posidonia meadows in their region. By fostering scientific discovery and environmental responsibility, this initiative strengthens local engagement in marine conservation, ensuring long-term impact in safeguarding these critical underwater habitats.

THE OUTCOMES:

The project outlines the following milestones:

Student-led research and lectures from university experts specialising in Posidonia oceanica research

Experiential learning activities with the contribution of local professional divers

Community outreach events and presentation of project findings to the Poros island

OUR PARTNER:

The General High School of Poros, led by a dynamic faculty, is dedicated to expanding learning beyond the classroom. With a forward-thinking vision, the principal and educators provide students with opportunities to explore new interests, engage with the community, and deepen their understanding of the world. Despite resource challenges, the school remains committed to innovative education. Supporting their efforts is an honor and a testament to the power of education in shaping engaged, knowledgeable, and environmentally conscious generations.
