Celebration of the World Environment Day
The World Environment Day on June 5, was established almost 50 years ago by the UN General Assembly, with the aim to remind the inhabitants of the planet that the future of humanity is directly linked to the future of ecosystems. This year the theme is plastic pollution and aims to remind us that our actions to tackle plastic pollution matter.
The Argolic Environment Foundation (AEF) together with the Hellenic Ornithological Society, the friends of the Wetland of Nafplion – Nea Kios, the fishermen of Nea Kios and the Education Center for the Environment and Sustainability (K .E.PE.A.) of Nea Kios organised on Saturday 27 May 2023 a joint event to celebrate the World Environment Day at the Wetland of Nea Kios – Nafplio. This year together with the World Environment Day we celebrated the Argolicorama Programme in Nea Kios during which 22 fishers cleaned the wetland from plastics and other litter. More information about the programme can be found here.
Around 60 people came to the event and participated in the activities. They had the chance to observe the birds of the area with binoculars and telescopes, to learn about the value of the Wetlands, to hear about the problems of the area and about the studies for improving the status of the Wetland.
The educational team of Nea Kio through different activities for kids talked about the several species of birds that visit the Wetland, their special characteristics and habits and encouraged the little ones to draw and create different crafts.
