THE CHALLENGE

Posidonia oceanica meadows play a crucial ecological role: they stabilize shorelines, store carbon, circulate nutrients and provide habitat for marine life. 

In Aegina, growing tourism pressure has led to the removal of seagrass from beaches and nearshore areas to maintain “clean” sandy coastlines. Winter banquettes, natural erosion barriers, have been bulldozed, and underwater meadows disturbed, weakening coastal resilience.

Historically, dried Posidonia was used locally for compost, insulation and roofing, reflecting a circular relationship with coastal ecosystems. These practices reflected a balanced, small-scale relationship with coastal ecosystems, while today that knowledge and respect have largely disappeared.

Without cultural reintegration of Posidonia’s value, ecological degradation risks continuing under the perception that seagrass is waste rather than a vital coastal ally.

THE PROJECT

Instead of focusing primarily on scientific communication, Vessel used art, architecture, workshops and storytelling to rebuild an emotional and cultural relationship with Posidonia. 

At the international level, ceramic vessels illustrating the lifecycle of Posidonia were exhibited at the Venice Biennale of Architecture, using dried seagrass as packing material to demonstrate circular application.

On Aegina, workshops, school activities and community dialogues explored traditional uses of seagrass (insulation, fertiliser, packing material) and promoted small-scale, non-extractive practices, strengthening local protection of seagrass meadows and beach banquettes.

Key activities:

  • Venice Biennale Installation: Creation and exhibition of ceramic vessels illustrating the life cycle of Posidonia, using dried seagrass as sustainable packing material.
  • Local Workshop Series (Aegina): Hands-on workshops on seagrass architecture, insulation, natural dyes, paper-making, sustainable harvesting and coastal protection.
  • School & Youth Engagement: Educational workshops, including collaboration with local preschool groups to explore beach ecology and winter seagrass functions.
  • Research & Experimentation: Exploration of traditional uses of seagrass in construction and agriculture, testing sustainable, small-scale applications.
  • Awareness & Advocacy: Public communication, exhibitions and dialogue with local authorities regarding beach banquette removal and meadow protection.

OUTCOMES

The project delivered a multi-layered program combining exhibition, education, research, outreach and community dialogue.

Impact at a glance:

  • Ceramic vessels installation exhibited at the Venice Biennale of Architecture (2025), bringing Mediterranean seagrass ecology to an international audience (previous edition attendance: 285,000 visitors).
  • 6 hands-on workshops delivered on Aegina, exploring seagrass architecture, insulation, natural dyes, paper-making and circular material applications.
  • 120+ direct participants engaged through practical workshops and public dialogue events encouraging respectful harvesting practices and emphasizing small-scale use rather than industrial exploitation.
  • 70+ member ecological WhatsApp network established, creating an ongoing local communication and mobilisation channel.
  • Collaboration with local schools, introducing children to coastal ecology and the protective function of winter seagrass banquettes.
  • Research and prototyping of clay–seagrass insulation and other small-scale reuse applications, extending experimentation beyond the grant period.
  • Public awareness strengthened around the ecological role of Posidonia in shoreline stabilisation, biodiversity support and climate resilience.
  • Advocacy dialogue initiated with municipal and port authorities to support stronger protection of seagrass meadows and beach banquettes.
  • International visibility positioned Aegina within a wider architectural and ecological discourse on culture-based marine stewardship.

 

These experiments are continuing beyond the grant period, extending the project’s practical legacy.
