Hydra and Spetses are among the most visited destinations in the Argosaronic, with intense recreational boating, marine taxis and seasonal anchoring placing significant pressure on seabed habitats.
While Posidonia meadows are protected under European legislation, no accurate, high-resolution spatial data existed for Hydra. Without clear habitat maps, effective anchoring management, enforcement and public awareness efforts were limited.
At the same time, scientific findings from a previous mapping held around Spetses required translation into accessible knowledge for local communities.
AEF supported iSea to conduct high-resolution mapping of Posidonia meadows in Hydra using satellite analysis, georeferenced diving surveys and classification algorithms.
In parallel, in Spetses, the focus shifted toward translating scientific data into clear messages through the production of informational materials and signage to address the ecological importance of Posidonia and to suggest responsible boating practices.
Findings were presented to municipalities and prepared for integration into national platforms and marine spatial planning discussions.
The project was completed according to plan, successfully delivering detailed Posidonia maps for both Hydra and Spetses.
This phase bridged science and society ensuring that mapping outputs translated into local ownership, informed decision-making and practical conservation dialogue.
