MedCleanUp in Porto Cheli
THE CHALLENGE
Fishing gear accounts for an estimated 20–45% of marine plastic entering the Mediterranean each year, with abandoned or lost nets, often referred to as “ghost nets”, continuing to entangle marine life, damage sensitive habitats such as seagrass meadows, and break down into microplastics over time.
Mismanaged end-of-life fishing gear has contributed to marine litter accumulation in ports and coastal waters, placing additional pressure on biodiversity and undermining the long-term sustainability of fisheries and tourism. Without structured prevention and recovery systems, this pollution cycle risks compounding environmental and economic impacts across the region.
THE PROJECT
Supported by the AEF, Enaleia expanded its Mediterranean CleanUp initiative to Porto Cheli, aiming to drive systemic change in tackling ghost gear and marine plastic while empowering local fishing communities and leveraging the circular economy.
Key activities:
- Establish Collection Points: Installation of clearly designated end-of-life fishing gear collection points in small ports and marinas.
- Fisher Training & Engagement: Direct engagement with local fishers to explain the environmental impact of discarded gear, introduce the circular upcycling pathway, build trust in the system and clarify practical procedures.
- Local “Connector” Identification: In each area, we identify and support one committed fisher who acts as local focal point, communication bridge between fishers and Enaleia and responsible contact when the collection point is full.
- Collection & Upcycling: When collection points are full the local connector contacts Enaleia, the gear is properly collected and the materials enter the recycling and upcycling chain.
OUTCOMES
The MedCleanUp intervention in Porto Cheli was implemented successfully and in full alignment with the agreed objectives. Building on the established collaboration between Enaleia and AEF in the wider Argolic Gulf, the project focused on setting up a functional prevention system and embedding responsible end-of-life fishing gear management into local fishing practices.
