Exploring Methana: A Journey Through Beautiful Trails and Good Friends

Earlier this month, we had the pleasure of visiting Methana to take part in the Leading Quality Trails Seminar (February 9-11). What an experience!

From the moment we arrived, we were welcomed with warmth and kindness by the wonderful Methana Active Citizens, whose passion for their region is truly inspiring. It didn’t take long for us to see why — Methana is a hidden gem, full of natural beauty and rich history.

One of the highlights of the seminar was meeting fellow trail enthusiasts from across Europe, including members of the European Ramblers Association, Andros Routes, and Paths of Greece. It was a fantastic opportunity to exchange ideas, share experiences, and learn from each other.

Above all, the seminar reinforced the vital role well-maintained, certified trails play in promoting sustainable tourism, along with research and environmental education activities. Trails aren’t just paths through nature; they are gateways to culture, heritage, knowledge and low-impact economic growth for local communities.

Naturally, no trip to Methana would be complete without experiencing its breathtaking landscapes firsthand. Walking the main route near the volcano area was unforgettable— the dramatic scenery, the sense of history beneath our feet, and the sheer tranquility of it all.

If there’s one thought we took away from this experience, it’s this: The certification process and the maintenance of well-preserved walking trails foster local engagement, strengthen communities through volunteer efforts, and highlight the natural and cultural heritage of a region. Such trails are a treasure at community level.

A big thank you to everyone who made this seminar so special. We can’t wait to hit the trails again soon!
