PRESS RELEASE: Research study reveals Posidonia degradation

Seagrass at Risk: New Findings from the Argosaronic!

Concerning findings from an independent Oxford study, commissioned by the AEF and the Rauch Foundation, and carried out with the support of Katheti, reveal severe degradation of Posidonia meadows in Poros due to fish farming.

The recent results are deeply concerning:

 – Degradation extending up to 900 metres from fish farming units
Posidonia coverage reduced by up to 53% and leaf length decreased by up to 46% in certain areas
– Minimal ecosystem recovery, even 14 years after the removal of fish farm operations.

This study fills a critical gap in knowledge and sends a clear message: “Posidonia seagrass meadows in the Argosaronic are under severe threat with some areas showing signs of irreversible degradation.”

As a Foundation, we believe that scientific research must guide environmental policy and drive public understanding. As AEF Executive Director Daphne Mantziou said: “We are proud to have supported this scientific study, in close collaboration with our partners, and we remain committed to protecting the natural wealth of the area and supporting the local communities in shaping a viable future”.
