AEF joins the Seas of Change: Poros Summit on Industrial Fish Farming

24/04/24

The AEF was excited to join communities, activists, scientists, political representatives, foundations, civil society organisations, and NGOs from across the Mediterranean and the world in discussing the growing threat of industrial carnivorous fish farming at the Poros Summit on Industrial Fish Farming held on April 18-19 2024, in Poros.

Over the two-day workshop participants had the opportunity to exchange information on common challenges facing the Mediterranean and the EU, explore sustainable environmental practices for the protection of the environment and economies, consider legislative changes at the EU level, examine alternatives to open-net industrial fish farming and coordinate efforts across multiple locations.

The summit, co-sponsored by the Rauch Foundation (US), Katheti (Greece), and the GSFR – Global Salmon Farming Resistance (Argentina), saw participation from 4 continents and 18 communities across Greece and Europe. The event emphasized the need for global cooperation and collective action in safeguarding marine resources, local societies, and economies from the threats imposed by massive fish farm installations.

In the aftermath of the event the AEF, along with over 160 organizations worldwide, has joined the campaign requesting UN FAO and the EU to exclude carnivorous fish farming from sustainable aquaculture policies.
